Enjoy the added security of your chip-enabled card! Did you recently receive your EMV chip-enabled card and have questions? Maybe you're not quite sure if you're using your card correctly. Check below for a helpful diagram to show you how to use your new EMV card and some frequently asked questions.
Q: What if a merchant doesn't have a chip-enabled terminal? Will my card work?
A: Yes. Just swipe your card's magnetic strip like you would with your previous card. Online purchases still work the same way they did with your previous card.
Q: When do I swipe? When do I insert?
A: When in doubt, swipe your card. If the terminal is chip-enabled, it will recognize that your card has a chip and prompt you to insert it instead.
Q: What is different about my new card?
A: Your new card features an embedded chip that improves security every time you make a purchase at a chip-enabled terminal. The chip technology creates a unique code for each transaction that is difficult to duplicate, reducing the risk of fraudulent charges.
Q: Does my chip card work at the ATM?
A: Yes. You can still use your card to get cash, check your balance and more.
Q: How do I process my transaction as credit?
A: Once you insert your card, tell the merchant you would like to process your transaction as a credit. They will provide further instruction at that point. If you are prompted for cash back, that means your transaction is trying to process as a debit and you will have to let the merchant know.
The advantage of this card comes with better security against fraud. You will be able to use your debit card for purchases at millions of merchant locations — everywhere you see the MasterCard logo. Your new card will also give you continued access to your existing checking and savings account at ATM machines.
